Finding Purpose Through Giving Back: Ana’s Story

Ana, born in Whangarei and raised in the Auckland region, has always had a deep connection with animals, especially horses. Growing up with a love for riding, her family cultivated her passion with summers spent on her grandparents’ beach-front property, riding a leased pony. Over the years, Ana built her life in the North Shore, balancing family, a bustling career in retail management, and a growing menagerie of pets, including her beloved horses.

In 2021, Ana and her husband welcomed their daughter, Bella, who was born with cerebral palsy and required extensive care. Bella’s bright spirit brought joy to Ana’s family, even amidst the challenges of her complex medical needs. Sadly, after a courageous battle, Bella passed away peacefully at home in July 2023.

The profound experience of caring for Bella inspired Ana to seek meaningful ways to give back, eventually leading her to North Shore Riding for Disabled (NSRDA). Volunteering at NSRDA has become a source of fulfilment for Ana, allowing her to channel her love for horses and her compassion into supporting others. She finds comfort and purpose in helping those who benefit from the therapeutic joy of horse riding.

For Ana, volunteering at NSRDA is a way to honour Bella’s memory and bring light to others, making a difference in the lives of children and adults who, like her daughter, face unique challenges. Through her service, Ana sees the impact of NSRDA’s mission firsthand, witnessing the strength and joy that therapeutic riding brings to each rider.

Join Us in Making a Difference!

If Ana’s story inspires you, consider joining our community of volunteers at NSRDA. Whether you have horse experience or simply a willingness to lend a hand, there are many ways to support us. Horse knowledge is helpful, especially for roles like preparing horses for rides or leading. Still, many of our volunteer roles focus more on helping our riders, such as side walking to assist children during their sessions.

Beyond working directly with the horses, many other ways exist to contribute. From listing second-hand items for sale, to helping with fence maintenance, sharing newsletter writing skills, or organising events, every contribution makes a difference. Financial support is always welcomed, but your time, skills, and enthusiasm are equally valuable.

If you’re ready to make a positive impact, contact NSRDA today. Together, we can continue improving the world, one ride at a time.
