Alice's Story

Eight years ago I was the proud owner and rider of Missie; we competed most weekends and hacked out on the farm during the week.  For no apparent reason I suffered a catastrophic dissection of one of my carotid arteries resulting in 2 strokes and a completely changed life.  I was told never to ride again as it was too risky and to be honest I wasn’t able to walk properly let alone ride!  So I donated Missie to North Shore RDA and having given up my job focused on rehabilitating myself.

Seven years ago I joined RDA as a volunteer and was reunited with my dear Missie and of course met all the wonderful volunteers and children. The vast array of disabilities and how the children coped with them impressed me and the support of the other people both volunteers and staff gave me a purpose in life.  Almost  two years ago one volunteer (who shall remain nameless) told me it was time I got back on Missie for a ‘Nana ride’ to help me cope with some pretty awful things going on in my life.  Needless to say as soon as I was back on board I didn’t want to get off and now enjoy the occasional ride at a sedate pace (and only the occasional canter)!

I am moving to the Bay of Plenty at the end of August to be closer to my grandchildren and the support of my son and daughter-in-law.  Missie will obviously remain at RDA and I know I will struggle hugely to leave her behind.  I have made some very special friends and am in total awe of what you all do each week.  Judith, Kate and Philippa deserve a special mention as I believe they have created a professional, caring environment where children, horses and volunteers can thrive.

I’m going to miss you all so, so much, Alice
